Migration routes from AL

I have a copy of a letter dtd 1857 written by my ancestor Hezekiah Chaney living in Cass Co at the time. He had moved from Talladega Co, AL and wast wanting to move back to AL. He mentions being "to sickly to trabel by a bote".
Does anyone know of the route he would have taken in those days. Both locations are far inland and it seems he would have had to go to Mobile and to Galveston or elsewhere on the TX coast.
Thanks,
E. D.
