I know this is an older post and by now you may have your answer. But, if not, take a look at a map, there is a river on the northern boundary of Cass Co, TX. It runs into and across LA to the Mississipi River. That would go down into the Gulf of Mexico and one then could go to Mobile and catch the river that runs from there up along the western boundary of Talladega Co, AL. Back in those days the rivers weren't all dammed up along their way like they are today.
