Thank you Betty. You are on the right track for what I am looking for. My ancestor was one of his men in the 16th Cav. He lived with or next to Robert Fitzhugh in 1860 and served in William Fitzhugh's unit.

I have been reading all I can about the time period and Fitzhugh's thinking and actions. Were the men he enlisted in 16th Cav kin or neighbors, did he house them and their families on the Fitzhugh land, or were they living there for employment reasons. Was my William Ratliff or Page Roark employeed at the Mill? or on the land? Did they serve on Red River as you mentioned or just wander in in 1860? So many questions and I am so far from Texas. Hope to get to Fort Worth and read through Fitzhugh's loose papers one day soon to try to uncover some the answers to these questions.

Pat
