I have just begun genealogy research and am finding it fascinating. (I love retirement!) I think that your great-great-grandfather, John IRBY, is my great-grandfather. He was born in Illinois, probably in Massac County, August 1850. The family moved to Dallas County (Sowers/Irving area) and his next brother, David, was born in Texas. According to the 1910 Census (taken 28 Apr. 1910), John IRBY's marriage (to my great-grandmother) was his fourth and her second. They had been married 20 years (21 years in November, which matches the date of 1889 that you have). There are discrepencies in your marriage certificate, but I am learning that documents contain misspellings and/or there may be errors in transcription. My great-grandmother was Martha "Mattie" Jane WELBORN, born 17 Feb. 1866, (probably in Muhlenburg) Kentucky. Her family moved to Collin County, Texas, and in 1884 she married a William M. SHADDIX and had a son, Jefferson SHADDIX. John IRBY had 5 sons (all born in Texas) from a previous marriage(s): William "Will" IRBY, Thomas "Tom" W. IRBY, Robert "Bob" Lee IRBY, Oakley "Oak" A. IRBY, and John IRBY (b. abt. 1879). In the 1880 Census (taken 8 June 1880) great-grandfather John was a widower with 5 sons (1 to 10 years of age) being helped by his Mother-in-law. There was a short-lived marriage to a neighbor's daughter, John Ann FULBRIGHT, 19 Aug 1880. On Nov 7th 1889 John IRBY married "M.J.P. SHADDOCK," and on 27 July 1890, my grandfather, Steve F. IRBY, was born in Sowers, Texas. John and Mattie had 2 more sons: another John IRBY, 10 June 1893, and Charles "Charlie" Monroe IRBY, 8 Sept. 1896. Great-grandfather John IRBY died some time after the 1910 Census. In 1920 my great-grandmother Mattie is shown in the same location, but she is now Head of Household and married to a Ben F. TAYLOR, b. abt. 1867 in Tennessee. Great-grandma Mattie's beloved youngest son, Charlie IRBY, died in 1947. She spent her last years in the city of Dallas with her son, Steve F. IRBY. She was almost 89 years of age when she died on 8 Jan. 1955. I was a High School Junior when I attended her funeral two days later. I would appreciate any family information you could share.
