Nocona, Montague County, Texas

January 14, 1921

Judge A. I. SCOTT was appointed by the Commissioners Court to the fill the position of county judge after the death of Judge Russell.

Private OTTO G. ROLLS
Private Otto G. Rolls, who was wounded at the front in France in 1918 and who died in a hospital in that country Dec. 15, 1918, was returned to the parents at Nocona and was buried in the Nocona cemetery January 12, 1921. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. CHURCH L. ROLLS; he was born August 2, 1894 and died in France Dec. 15, 1918. The body was landed at Hoboken, New Jersey Dec. 18, 1920 and arrived in Nocona Jan. 11, 1921. The funeral service was conducted by Elder F. S. VANCE of the Church of Christ. All Nocona business houses were closed from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. for the funeral. The body was laid to rest in the presence of a large congregation, and with military honors by former service men, and with these we venture to pause a moment to honor a hero, whose sacrifice with unnumbered thousands of others, American politicians have rendered almost fruitless.

Gardner-Crain
C. G. GARDNER and Miss CHRISTINE CRAIN were united in marriage at Goodnight Monday, Jan. 10, according to a telegram received by Nocona friends. After the ceremony, they went to Dalhart for a few days stay. Mr. Gardner was with the Nocona Telephone Co. but since last summer, has been with the Kellogg Switchboard & Supply Co. at Wichita Falls. Mrs. Gardner is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. W. CRAIN.

Child Seriously Burned
A little boy by the name of GREEN was seriously and painfully burned Tuesday morning while trying to kindle a fire at the Cottage Hotel. He mistook gasoline for coal oil and the blazing gasoline enveloped him from head to feet. He ran out of the hotel and some men caught him and tore the burning clothes from him. He is about 11 years old and the son of the late HUIE GREEN, the family is very distressful circumstances. WILL LEE made up a purse for their relief Wednesday morning.

Private PAUL VILLEMIN of Headquarter Co. 76th Field Artillery, Camp Pike, Arkansas, accompanied the body of OTTO G. ROLLS as military escort. He expects to receive his discharge in about two months when he will return to his home at New Iberia, Louisiana.

A.W. COLEMAN of Ringgold was in Nocona and changed his paper from Ringgold to Belcherville where he is moving, building a new house on the Denton Ranch that J. W. MADDOX of the Valley owns and will have part of that place.

C. W. GILES visited his son H B. GILES at Purcell, Oklahoma.

Local and Personal
Mrs. S. T. HUMPHREYS and little daughter GAIL were in Wichita Falls.

Miss PEARL HOWARD of Spanish Fort was the guest of Mrs. CHARENCE CARMICHAEL.

Mrs. C. E. ANTRAM was on the sick list.

Misses CHRISTINE CRAIN and EMMA CARMICHAEL were at Gainesville.

Miss OLLIE LEMON returned to her school at Vernon.

M. A. ROPER’S paper will be sent to Corona, New Mexico instead of Route 2, Nocona.

Mrs. THOMASON of Fort Worth visited her mother, Mrs. BEAL.

Mr. and Mrs. ELMER JETER went to Saint Jo to visit her parents, Judge and Mrs. A. L. SCOTT.

Mr. and Mrs. A. O. TAYLOR and son FINIS of Bellevue visited her sister, Mrs. W. E. PAYNE and family.

Mr. and Mrs. COLLIS RUSSELL left for their home at Junction City, Kansas where he is in the tailoring business.

Mrs. JORA DIXON and daughter Miss BRUCE of Wichita Falls spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. R. R. ALEXANDER and family. OLIN ALEXANDER accompanied them back to Wichita Falls, en route to Memphis, Texas, his new home.

Mrs. D. A. PRICE of near Bonita, who was taken to Dallas for an operation, returned home after X-ray examination proved that she was afflicted with a tumor and an operation would be necessary after she was strong enough.

Mrs. W. T. RUSSELL and family will move to the family home in Nocona. Mr. and Mrs. T. C. ALVERSON, who have had rooms with Mr. and Mrs. O. B. CURLIN at the Russell home, have rented the Wilson place near the school house and moved there. Mr. and Mrs. ROB KELLEY are leaving for Bowie in a few days.

M. G. LOVETT of Spanish Fort arrived from Paducah, Texas where he had been on business. LEE MITCHELL, who used to live near Spanish Fort, sent a subscription to the News by Mr. Lovett.

DEAN HENLEY Killed
DEAN LAFAYETTE HENLEY, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. HENLEY of Nocona, was shot and killed Friday, Jan. 14 at or near Stratford near Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. His death was first reported by BILL GABBERT. As to how or why, no reliable report has been received. It has been reported that he was in an affray with one of the GABBERTS. According to the rumor, BILL GABBERT and again FRED GABBERT have been connected with the deplorable occurrence, but all we know is merely rumors.

BEDFORD HENLEY left Saturday night and arrived home Sunday morning with the body. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the home family in Nocona, services conducted by Rev. W. B. ANDRESS of Gainesville, assisted by Rev. G. P. HUMPHRIES / HUMPHREYS of Nocona. Interment was at the Nocona cemetery after the funeral service. DEAN LAFAYETTE HENLEY was born Oct. 17, 1891 and died Jan. 14, 1921.

Mrs. JOHN DOSIER Dead
Mrs. JOHN DOSIER, formerly Mrs. MAY EVERETT, died of pneumonia Tuesday and was buried at the Starkey Cemetery Wednesday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Dosier had been married only about three weeks.

Rev. Hicks Leaves Nocona
Owing to the vacancy in the pastorate of the Methodist Church at Decatur, Rev. R. C. HICKS was sent from Nocona to that place.

Hughes-Goodspeed
E. P. HUGHES of Vera, Knox County, Texas and Miss ZULA GOODSPEED of Nocona were married Jan. 6 and left for their home at Vera.

Farewell Party
Miss THELMA COBB entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. R. STUMP Tuesday for a farewell party in honor of CURTIS HICKS and sister Miss MARY HICKS, who are leaving for their new home at Decatur. Attending were: Misses MAY HICKS, ANNA MAE JONES, EVA BONHAM, LEONA TRIPP, EULA PRIDDY, LOIS GWALTNEY, MAURINE COOPER, FRANCES FLADOS and FLORENCE FLADOS; Messrs. CURTIS HICKS, JAMES MCCALL, ARTHUR TRIPP, BOB FLYNN, ATKINS REYNOLDS, T. C. TRIPP, BILL BOWDRY, JOE FLOURNOY, HERMAN WEISE and JIM SMITH.

Miss IVA RYAN of Gainesville visited her sister Miss MARGARET RYAN, who is one of our school teachers.
Mr. and Mrs. ERNEST MILLS entertained the young people of the neighborhood with a good time party.
Miss IDA CABLE visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. D. CABLE.
FRED S. MEEK of Gordonville visited his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. GREEN.
REUBEN ELROD and JACK BREEZE of the Barrel Springs community visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. GREEN and entertained themselves with a little “rodeo” of their own and Reuben fell on his head.
Mr. and Mrs. J. L. JENNINGS are rejoicing over the arrival of a fine girl.

Bad Man in Bad
J. A. LACOUER, one of the two bad men who were arrested by Marshal ANDERSON for the robbery of the Jolly station, escaped from the Henrietta jail a few days ago with another bad man. Together they beat it to Fort Worth and held and shot an old apple peddler, later captured and jailed at Fort Worth. Their apple peddler victim died from the effects of the shot…

Married 52 Years
Monday, Jan. 24, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. BUCKLEY quietly celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. They were married in Boone County, Arkansas on Sunday, Jan. 24, 1869. Both are natives of old Tennessee but have lived in Texas 45 years, they lived in Arkansas 18 years before coming to Texas, and Nocona 27 of the 45 years in Texas. Mrs. Buckley’s maiden name was RALEY, NANCY E. RALEY.

Mr. and Mrs. G. C. MILLER arrived in Nocona from Coryalis, Oregon and are the guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. JNO. R. MILLER.

Mr. and Mrs. VESTER HODGES of Hollis, Oklahoma are the guests of his sisters, Mrs. CHESTNUT and Mrs. QUIN PAYNE this week.

Mrs. CLIFFORED B. KEENE returned from a visit with relatives at Justin.

Mr. and Mrs. J. O. COBB were guests of their sons, HUBERT and MARVIN at Wichita Falls.

In Memory of Mrs. Doshier
The death angel visited the home of JOHN W. DOSHIER and took wife and mother, Mrs. ADA DOSHIER. .. ill a short time with pneumonia. She was born Jan. 17, 1883 in Angelina County, Texas and died January 18, 1921 at Bonita, 38 years old. She was first married to JOE E. EVERETT April 13, 1903, he died April 11, 1919. To their union, five children were born, four daughters and one son, all of whom survive her. At the age of 14, she obeyed the Gospel and lived a Christian life until death. She was married to J. W. DOSHIER Dec. 28, 1920. ..She was laid to rest in the Starkey cemetery Wednesday afternoon. Elder HOWELL of Nocona conducted the services…

Baptist Ladies Auxiliary
On last Monday afternoon, the Baptist Ladies Auxiliary met at the home of Mrs. J. A. MESSER. The hostess, assisted by Mrs. GEORGE A. GWALTNEY, served delicious refreshments. Next Monday, the auxiliary will meet with Mrs. T. B. WILKES.
