I'm thinking her husband may have died during the Civil War. The family is on the 1860 census in Bowie Co, TX. Her husband is listed as James. There is a James Cowley, confederate, TX, listed on the Civil War site.

Go to Bowie Co, TX GenWeb site -- http://txgenes.com/TxBowie/ -- type Cowley in their search feature, first items is a brief history on James.

Happy Hunting (^_^)
