I am currently doing some genealogy research on my Outlaw ancestry. I have been able to trace these roots through Tennessee Census records, family testimonies, and death records…but only to a certain point. This is what I currently know:
My grandmother, Vivara Outlaw, was born in Hardeman County, Tennessee, 9/12/1902. Vivara Outlaw’s father was Jacob Outlaw (married to Lenora Elizabeth Comer). They had 12 living issue (5 males, 7 females); they are all now deceased.
Her father, Jacob Outlaw (1861-1928) was the youngest sibling of Joseph Outlaw (b. abt 1815) and Mary Wallace (b. 10-1816). The other siblings were John (b. 1837), Martha Jane (b. 1838), Mary Alice (b. 1839-d. 1857), Sarah Satira (b. 1842), Jim (b. 1843), Francis (b. 1847-d. bef 1860), Joseph F. (b. 1848), Margaret Elizabeth (b. 1853). Martha Jane married Bill Harris and eventually moved to Texas. Sarah married George Herzog and eventually moved to California. Margaret (Betty) married Dick Harris, but divorced him and re-joined her brothers later in life.
Sometime between 1861 and 1870, Joseph Outlaw left the family taking his eldest son, John. Apparently, Joseph tried to contact his son, Jacob, later in life (after other siblings in TN were deceased). Also, there was a court document from Joseph’s estate (in Texas) in Jacob’s possession, but he refused to have anything to do with his father or his money. His daughters later destroyed that document.
At this point, there isn’t much to go on for what happened to Joseph after he left his family. My grandmother’s sister, before she died, had said that he went to Texas and re-married and had a new family. I have been in touch with one of Joseph’s daughter’s descendents, who also does genealogical research, but she has been unable to find any documentation of a Joseph or John Outlaw in Texas during that time period. She has heard, through family members, that Joseph changed his name to Everett Outlaw, but cannot find any info under that name either.
The other mystery concerning Joseph is who was his father. Family members believe it is Lewis Outlaw (b. abt 1774 in Hertford NC); indeed, Joseph lists both his mother and father as being from NC (on 1850 Hardin Co, TN census). Also listed on that same census are Elva, James, and Lewis Outlaw: Lewis is a documented son of the elder Lewis (per will dated 5/3/1841) and I believe Elva is also a son. One genforum posting said that elder Lewis had two older sons who were bastards. There is apparently some existing documentation for this. Joseph and James appear to be those two as their birth years show they are substantially older than the other siblings by mother, Elisha Harrell: Lewis, Alexander, Francis, Emaline, and Richard Outlaw. Some of these siblings go on to Montgomery Co., Texas. Coincidentally, one of Joseph’s daughters, Martha, moved to Montgomery Co., Texas. There is reason, then, to believe that Joseph moved to Montg. Co., Texas.
I would be most appreciative of any information that can help me figure out this mystery
