The Bowie Blade Bowie, Montague County, Texas Thursday, October 15, 1942 Mrs. SARAH JANE MILES Mrs. Sarah Jane Miles, pioneer resident of the Newport-Post Oak community, died at her home October 12. She was the daughter of HENRY D. and CATHERINE GIFFORD, born in Pokhagon, Michigan July 9, 1845 and was 97 years old, oldest person in this section. Married to G. W. MILES in Michigan in 1859, she spent much time as a nurse to her husband and other soldiers during the Civil War. Later Mr. Miles became a minister in the Holiness Church, and they came to Collin County, Texas in 1877. In 1882, they came to Clay County where she has resided since. Mr. Miles preceded her in death some years ago. Religious rites were conducted from the Methodist Church in Post Oak by Rev. A. L. BENNIA of Vashti, assisted by Rev. DATE HUDSON of Post Oak. Interment was in the Post Oak cemetery directed by Owens and Brumley Funeral Home. Aunt Sarah, as she was affectionately known, believed in practical religion and ministered to the sick of the community, often going on horse back long distances to administer and comfort to those in need. She continued this type of service as long as she was able. She underwent hardships associated with the early life of the pioneer… Mrs. Miles was the oldest of seven children, only one of whom survive, C. A. GIFFORD of Post Oak. Pallbearers were LESLIE GIFFORD, LELOY GIFFORD, A. J. GIFFORD, R. W. SLAUGHTER, J. T. WEST, and J. W. SCHNITTOU, all nephews. L. D. PRUNER Funeral services for L. D. PRUNER, age 67, of Wichita Falls and formerly a business man of Bowie, were conducted Wednesday morning October 14. Rev. ROBERT C. JONES, Church of Christ minister of Wichita Falls, officiated. Interment was at Elmwood cemetery arranged by Owens and Brumley. Pruner, who had been in ill health for some time, is survived by his wife; five daughters, Mrs. J. T. CLAUDER of Pampa, Mrs. W. B. KEY of Gatesville, Mrs. W. E. LOVEJOY of Gatesville, Mrs. J. B. HONEYCUTT of Houston, and Miss EVELYN PRUNER of Electra; two sons, JIM ED of Gatesville and L. D. Jr. of Grand Prairie. Thursday, October 22, 1942 JOSEPH POWELL WELCH Funeral services for JOSEPH POWELL “Uncle Joe” WELCH, age 78, were conducted from the Newport Church by Rev. PLES WARREN, Methodist minister of Ringgold, Sunday afternoon. Born in Mississippi Jan. 11, 864, son of THOMAS COLUMBUS and ANN HUTCHISON WELCH, he died at his home October 16 after a lingering illness. He came to Clay County 64 years ago, a pioneer settler. He was married to Miss MARY LEE GARRETT at Newport in 1886. He served the community as school trustee for a number of years, as blacksmith, carpenter, farmer, and stockman, operated a broom factory and for approximately 50 years had been justice of the peace. He was active in civic and community affairs. Surviving are Mrs. Welch; two daughters, Mrs. NETTIE LANGFORD of Wichita Falls and Mrs. IRENE KING of Canadian, Texas; six sons, T. L. WELCH of Demmitt, WALTER and WRAY, both of Canadian, ARCHIE of Phoenix, Arizona, TEHO of Redmond, Oregon, and W. T. of Newport; 24 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, and other relatives. Interment was in the Newport cemetery arranged by Owens and Brumley Funeral Home. Thursday, November 5, 1942 F. J. ARTERBURY Funeral services for F. J. ARTERBURY, age 57, are being held this Thursday afternoon at the Burgess Funeral Home chapel with Rev. KIRK M. BEARD of the First Methodist Church in charge. Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery arranged by Burgess Funeral Home. He died Wednesday, November 5, after an illness of about six years at Bowie. He was born Feb. 28, 1885. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. WILLIE MAE ARTERBURY; seven daughters, Mrs. J. J. WHTIE and Mrs. DAVID GREGORY of Yakima, Washington; Mrs. R. F. SMITH and Mrs. D. G. FLORIDA of Fort Worth, Mrs. MELVIN TRUITT of Greenwood, Mrs. JOHN LANA of Salem, Oregon, and Mrs. ALTON TAGE of Bowie; and four sons, E. F. of San Francisco, J. T. of Yakima, Wash., C. C. and LEON of Bowie, and 13 grandchildren. WILLIAM EDWARD KILCREASE William Edward Kilcrease, age 59, a native of Alabama and an Montague County resident since 1893, died Monday at his home in Lindale community. Kilcrease was born in 1883 and was married in 1924 to Miss BESSIE MCCARTNEY of Bowie. She and three children, EDWARD FRANK, MARY LOUISE and GLENA MAE, all of Lindale, are survivors. There are five sisters, Mrs. E. B. MORRIS, Mrs. WES WIGGINS, Mrs. B. F. TINSLEY, Mrs. E. B. LONG, all of Bowie, and Mrs. L. A. WIGGINS of Healdton, Oklahoma; and one brother, A. T. KILCREASE of Casa Grande, Arizona. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon from the Lindale community church with Rev. KIRK M. BEARD officiating, assisted by Rev. A. J. QUINN. Interment was in the Lindale cemetery arranged by Burgess Funeral Home. December 31, 1942 Mrs. J. W. LAWSON Funeral services for Mrs. J. W. LAWSON, age 71, were conducted in the Owens and Brumley Funeral Home chapel Saturday, December 26, by Rev. A. C. HUFF, assisted by Rev. A. O. RUE. Mrs. Lawson died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. E. DONLEY of Wichita Falls, December 223, after an illness of two months. Interment was in the Vashti cemetery. Former a resident of Vashti, Mrs. Lawson had in recent years spent most of her time in Wichita Falls. Survivors include a son, A. C. LAWSON of Wichita Falls; five daughters, Miss ABBIE and Miss NONA LAWSON, Mrs. BERT ROSS and Mrs. W. E. DONLEY of Wichita Falls, and Mrs. LEE GILL of Bellevue; a sister Mrs. EMMA LAWSON of Wichita Falls, and two brothers, FRANK JARRETT of Bluegrove and JOHN JARRETT in California. Pallbearers were E. C.HUDSON, J. W. DONLEY, P D. DONLEY, B. I. HAYS, PEW LAMBERT, and E. W. JACKSON. T. H. GARRETT Funeral services for THOMAS HENRY GARRETT, age 71, were conducted at the chapel of Owens and Brumley Funeral Home by Rev. JOHN WEBB, pastor at Selma, Dec. 25. Mr. Garrett died at his home in Bowie after an illness of some nine month, Dec. 24. Born at Gainesville, Nov. 26, 1871, he was united in marriage with PEACHIE ALMA REED at Bridgeport in December 1905. The couple lived near Bridgeport for three years after their marriage, moved to Alvord for two years and to Montague County in 1910 where they have lived since. Mr. Garrett was a farmer and stockman in the Briar Creek community until ill health forced his retirement almost a year ago, caused him to sell the farm and locate in Bowie. Mr. Garrett was a former school trustee of the Briar Creek school and took an active part in the community. Interment was at Briar Creek cemetery. Surviving besides his widow, are three sons, LUTEHR of Bridgeport, ANDREW of Yuma, Arizona, and GRADY of Bowie; three daughters, Mrs. DORA TODD of Winterhaven, California, Mrs. ALMA OWENS and Mrs. AGNES OWENS, both of Foss, Oklahoma; and 22 grandchildren. Pallbearers were DEE HANKINS, LEE BAILEY, OSCAR UNDERWOOD, HERMAN FOX, WINSEY SANDERS and G.H. GOLDEN. Notify Administrator about this message?
