Glad the info helps. I looked a little more (database: 19th Century Newspapers) and apparently more than one St. Louis newspaper carried the story. The only one mentioned by name is "St. Louis Democrat". I checked WorldCat and found several newspapers for that period which might have carried the story. In any event, it is a very interesting article and gives a fairly detailed account of how Kellum was "set-up" and killed. His son was used for bait. The motive seems to be that Kellum and his co-horts were thought to be rustling livestock and committing other "depradations" upon the community. It sounds as though the police in St. Louis considered his story credible and they were holding him for Texas authorities. Possibly the old St. Louis papers cover what happened to Mr. Hunson. I'm curious now so I'm going to check the 1870 census for the alleged killer. Rick
