Last part of your query jumps around a bit and hard for me to follow. Take into consideration a Texas accent and how they might have pronounced Spears.

1870 census Newton Co, TX:

Spires[sic], Susan, 21, b LA
" Melvin, 4, b TX
" John, 8/12, b TX [could be the John you want????]

Next door:

Spires, Edward, 53, b GA
" Elizabeth, 29, b LA
" Emma J., 5, b TX
" Samuel, 2, b TX

Now, compare with 1880 census, this might be the Edward from 1870 with a second younger wife, note Samuel in the household matches Samuel from the "Spires" household in 1870:

Zebedie SPEERS Self M Male W 65 GA Farmer NC NC
Harriet SPEERS Wife M Female W 43 AL Keeping House AL AL
Samuel SPEERS Son S Male W 12 TX At Home GA AL
Nancy A. SPEERS Dau S Female W 9 TX At Home GA AL
Martha A. SPEERS Dau S Female W 6 TX At Home GA AL
Martha J. COTTON SDau S Female W 12 TX At Home GA AL
Josephine COTTON SDau S Female W 9 TX At Home GA AL
Marietta SPEERS Dau S Female W 4 TX At Home GA AL

Susan of 1870 may be a widowed daughter-in-law of Edward/Zebedie????? Maybe she remarried???? It's something to play around with.

The above Zebedie SPEERS is on page 528 "A" of the 1880 census, look what's on page 528 "B", I think the children of Susan were dittoed in with surname of their stepfather, I've had this happen a couple of times when I've been researching.

Jasper DENBY Self M Male W 26 TX Farmer NC GA
Susan DENBY Wife M Female W 32 LA Keeping House TN LA
William DENBY Son S Male W 14 TX At Home TX LA
John W. DENBY Son S Male W 10 TX At Home TX LA
Thomas J. DENBY Son S Male W 4 TX At Home TX LA
William D. DENBY Son S Male W 3 TX At Home TX LA
Lether Jane DENBY Dau S Female W 1 TX At Home TX LA

William 14, is probably the 4 yr old Milton of the 1870 census and John age 10 is probably the John you want. BUT, more research needs to be done to prove, or even disprove this.

If this does prove to be the right line, here is Susan's maiden name on the death certificate of her son from second marriage:

Name: Thomas Jeff Denby
Death date: 02 Dec 1953
Death place: Orange, Orange Co., Texas
Gender: Male
Race or color (on document): w
Age at death: 78 years
Estimated birth year:
Birthdate: 30 Dec 1874
Birthplace: Newton County, Texas
Marital status: Widowed
Spouse's name:
Father's name: Jasper Denby
Father's birthplace:
Mother's name: Susie Mcbride
Mother's birthplace:
Occupation: Saw Mill
Residence: Deweyville, Newton Co., Texas
Cemetery name: King
Burial place: Newton County, Tex.
Burial date:
Additional relatives:
Film number: 2114065
Digital GS number: 4165537
Image number: 1221
Reference number: 63842
Collection: Texas Deaths, 1890-1976

Go to Rootsweb's WorldConnect -- http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi -- Type in Denby, Jasper and you'll find several working on that line. Looks like Jasper and Susan were married 14 Apr 1874, Newton Co, TX. License 12 Apr 1874, so there must be a record, but no one says anything about the two boys born prior to that marriage date. I think they are Susan's from previous marriage.

All these people tie together with the Newton Co, TX location.

Happy Hunting (^_^)
