Gilbert Matthews Funeral is Held Friday at 10:30
Funeral services for Gilbert Matthews, 91, who died Thursday, were held Friday at 10:30 a.m. from Phillips and Luckey Chapel. Rev. Earl S. Yokley of St. John's Methodist Church officiated and burial was in Forest Grove Cemetery.
The following grandsons acted as pallbearers: Clarence and George Matthews, Otha Ray Lumpkin, Emory and Bill Alford and a great-grandson, Lee Young Jr.
Gilbert Matthews was born in Bell county, Texas in 1866 and was a son of Jesse L. and Marcella M. Matthews. The family came to Milam County when he was young and he had lived his life in the Rockdale territory.
Gilbert Matthews was married to Arena Elizabeth Marsh in 1893 and of their 8 children born, seven survive. They are Uriah and Jack Matthews of Houston, Howard Matthews of Humble, Mrs. Maud Williams, Mrs. Annie Alford, Mrs. Ollie Cook of Rockdale and Mrs. Gertrude Marz who is in Greenland. There are 15 grand children and a number of great-grandchildren and other connections.
