Hi Lillian,
I am going to try to put you in contact with some of your closer Tye cousins.I met some of them on a trip to Missouri and they are great people!
Sarah Elizabeth Mays (Sally) was the daughter of William (Billy) Mays and Obedience Terrell.William and Obedience met and married in Wake County, NC, lived in Grayson County, VA, went back to NC, then back to Grayson County and finally settled in the part of Knox County that later became Whitley County. You probably know that Sally's husband, Henry Howell Tye, supposedly died while taking hogs to market in SC or GA (records differ as to where). Some of us believe he actually just deserted the family since he was so in debt from bad business deals.
The Mays line and Terrell lines are very interesting. My favorite character is Marmaduke Mays, the brother of Sarah Mays Tye who never married, was a miser, and was sued by some of his slaves who claimed to be descended from an Indian woman and therefore were entitled to be free.
