TYE & DOUGHTY families CANADA to AUSTRALIA
Hello Tye researchers,
I am helping a chappie in Canada with his DOUGHTY and TYE family.Andrew is
in Toronto and contacted me as he came across a posting I had made regarding
the DOUGHTY and TYE families some time back.I was trying to ascertain if
Thomas Henry DOUGHTY, who married Lottie TYE in Toronto, Canada on 10th
August 1881, was one of my husband's great grandfather Robert John DOUGHTY'S
missing brothers. Robert was one of five brothers who immigrated to
Australia between the years 1874 and 1888. Three DOUGHTY brothers and one
sister stayed in England and two were missing.
For awhile it was thought by the family that Thomas Henry DOUGHTY, was one
of the missing brother, who had immigrated to Canada. However, we have
since found out that Thomas Henry DOUGHTY was in fact born circa 1857 in
Canada and was the son of Richard and Jane Dorothy DOUGHTY (nee HOLMAN).
Thomas Henry Doughty married Lottie TYE in Toronto on the 10th August 1881.
Lottie was the daughter of John (born circa 1833) and Elizabeth TYE (nee
POWELL) (born circa 1846) both were born in England. Their children all born
in Canada were Lottie b. circa 1861, Allan b. circa 1863, twins Georgina and
George b. 1865, Charles b. circa 1874, Lulu b. circa 1876, and John b. circa
1880. At the time of the 1881 Census the family were living in Yorkville,
York East, Ontario.
Thomas Henry DOUGHTY, most like with his wife Lottie and their two children
Georgina and Gordon Rigney DOUGHTY, sailed from Canada to England, and from
England they sailed to Melbourne, Australia on board the steam ship "Orient"
arriving in Melbourne in February 1887.
Not long after their arrival, Lottie DOUGHTY (nee TYE'S) brother Allan TYE
arrived also on the "Orient" in December 1887, followed by another brother
George some time before 1890, as George married Alicia Florinda McMillan in
Melbourne in 1890.Brother Allan TYE married Ceceila SULLIVAN in 1894.All
the TYES and DOUGHTYS were of the Methodist faith back in Canada.
The TYE brothers went on to make a name for themselves in Melbourne.George
TYE died in 1930 and had made a small fortune over the years through the
ownership of the TYE Furniture Store in Melbourne and Alicia TYE (nee
McMILLAN) after the death of George, decided to travel and visited her
extended family living in Oxford, Ohio. Alicia's mother Sarah McMILLAN (nee
ALLEN) was born in Longford Ireland, some of the family immigrated to
Australia and the rest immigrated to the USA. It was in USA where Alicia met
up with her cousin Maye Morris, who taught Alicia to make Patchwork quilts.
Upon Alicia TYE'S return to Australia she made four quilts, not in the
American way, but the English way as taught to her by her cousin. George and
Alicia TYE (nee McMILLAN) had three children, Allen, Ethel and Lillie.
Allan and Cecillia TYE (nee SULLIVAN) appear not to have had any children
and they left their estate in Romsay in Victoria for the use of the Royal
Victorian Deaf and Blind Children of Australia. The estate was actually set
up in 1940, before their deaths.
Thomas Henry and Lottie DOUGHTY (nee TYE), appear to have been in the
manufacturing business, maybe manufacturing furniture for Lottie's brother
George's store?
I am hoping that by posting so much information about these families,
someone out there may know more about their stories, either in England,
Canada or Australia.Especially, in Australia and any history about the TYE
family and thier furniture store and the gift made to the Deaf and Blind
Society.
Regards,
