Tye's of Culpeper County, Va.& Oglethorpe County Ga.
There were severalTye families living close together in Oglethorpe County, GA in the early 1800's whose origins are still unknown. Perhaps there is a clue to their ancestors in the information below.
One of the residents of Oglethorpe in 1811 was James Tye whom I found had married Frankie Collins in Culpeper, Va. in 1801.(I have not found James Tye after this time.)
Another Tye at Oglethorpe was Henry Tye b.1764 who is said to have married Sally Radford there in 1807. Sally/Sarah Radford was a descendent of the Maxey family. When checking the date of Sally's birth, it showedthat Henry was a generation older than Sally. But if Henry of 1764 was the father of a younger Henry b. in the 1780's, the age difference would be no problem. Then I found a Henry Tye listed in Culpeper Virginia on a tax list of 1783 and also in regard to a property settlement of 1812 in Culpeper. This would possibly be the elder Henry who stayed in Va.(I have found no more of Henry Tye & Sally Radford Tye since their marriage.)
It then seemed logical to suppose that the other Tye families of Oglethorpe County, Ga. may also have originated in Culpeper County Va. These would include Samuel Tye b.c. 1790-1800 in Va., Jobe Tye b.c. 1800, and Job Tye b.1803 or 1809 in Va. who was most likely a son of Samuel and Elizabeth Tye. There is also a Thomas Tye and wife, Nancy living with Samuel Tye in the 1820 census. Thomas was b.c. 1781.
At this time I have found only a few other Tye records for Culpeper County, Va. There is no way yet to prove any of these Oglethorpe Tyes are from Culpeper, at least at this time. But all the dates and names so far have seemed to fit very well.
These are the only other Tye family members I have found in Culpeper County,Va.:
Sarah W. TYE b.c. 1810 who married Peter Hansbrough Nov.5, 1835 in Culpepper County VA. This family remained in Virginia. Sarah may be a daughter of Henry or of one of his sons.
Ann F. Tye born c.1815 Va.and married John C.Hasborough who was an attorney age 43 in 1850 in Culpeper County,VA.(From 1850 census)
Mary Tye b.c.1822 in Va. Lived with Ann F. Tye and John C. Hasborough in 1850 in Culpeper Cty. VA (From 1850 census)
Susan Tye age? was shown in 1850 census Va. at Greenbrier County near Culpeper Cty.
Now the question is, WHO WAS THE FATHER OF HENRY TYE born 1764? We know of several of the sons of Allen Tye. William b.1730, Solomon b.1734, Anderson b.1741. But there may have been others, including John G. Tye and Lambeth Tye, named after his grandfather.
There is one clue. It may mean nothing but it is very interesting. There is an Anderson Tye listed in the 1870 census of Georgia. The given name, Anderson, is a little unusual and when put with Tye it seems to be a clue worth evaluating. This family's ancestors may have been associated with the Tye family that came from Culpeper, Va. to Georgia. The head of that early Culpeper family could have been Anderson Tye b. 1741, son of Allen Tye.
1870 TYEANDERSON 36 M GA JONESBORO P O CLAYTON COUNTY. (Series:M593 Roll:144 Page:109) THIS IS A BLACK COUPLE, he is shown as a mulatto man. BUT SINCE THERE WAS AN ANDERSON TYE IN OUR FAMILY HE MAY HAVE WORKED FOR OUR TYE FAMILY. Anderson Tye age 36 is a farm laborer b. Georgia. His wife is Silvy. They have son, Henry age 5 and d. Martha A. age 4 and Massen A. age 2. They are a black couple. All b. Georgia. Anderson would be b.c.1834 in GA.
These are the only Tye records found so far from Culpeper County, Va. . Does anyone have more information to help put all this together?
