There has been some confusion with the name Lambert/Lambeth Tye. I've come across a few items that show these are two persons.
LAMBERT TYE appears to be the son of Richard and Joyce Tye and he was born in 1655. (It has been said he was born in 1666 but that does not fit his age given in a deposition in 1681.) Lambert's wife was Mary (unk).
LAMBETH TYE seems to be the grandson of Lambert Tye. (More below.)Here are the tidbits of info. that have led me to this conclusion:
The following is one reason I think that Lambert b. 1655 was an orphan of Richard Tye.
“It is added and condiscended by me Charles Sparrow abovesd that in case of Decesse of the sd Elizabeth Tye dureing her minority the sd 1000 acres of Land above given and graunted w’th all my rights and previledges therof shall descend and come by hereditrary succession to the surviv’r or surviv’rs of the orphanes of Capt Richd Tye aforsed decd witness my hand this first day of Sept: 1659" Test Thomas DreweCharles Sparrowe rec, 7br.8.59 This is from the Charles City County court records.
The notice implies that if Elizabeth does not survive her childhood, that there could be orphanS of Richard's. We know of only one other child of Richard's who was Frances. If Elizabeth was deceased, then there would only be one orphan left, that one being Frances. But this document mentions possible orphans as PLURAL, if that were to be the consequence. One of the other orphans may well have been Lambert b. 1655. Also Charles Sparrow knew Richard well and surely knew of his children. He certainly knew Elizabeth’s name. If there were only Eliz. and Frances, why would he have not named Frances as the only other orphan?
Lambert lived in Henrico County, Va. He worked for Thomas Cocke at what seems to have been an Inn and tavern. It is probable that his son Allen, born late in life, grew up in Henrico county.
Here is one more tidbit that is of interest:
"Mark of Lambert Tye 5 February 1692, a hole in right ear and two slits in under side of left ear."
This must be theway to identify a cow or horse.
From Quarterly By Virginia Genealogical Society page 12.Published 1963 Virginia. Original from the University of Wisconsin - Madison v.15-17 1977-1979 Digitized Apr 24, 2008
I believe LAMBETH TYE was the first child of Allen Tye, born before his sister Frances came along March 16, 1724. He must have arrived very early in the 1720's. The records of Bristol parish do not show Lambeth's name among Allen Tye's children.
"The minutes of all vestry meetings from October 30, 1720 to April 18, 1789 are complete EXCEPT FOR THE PERIOD between OCTOBER 28, 1722 AND NOV n 1723. ..."
The Vestry Book and Register of Bristol Parish, Virginia, 1720-1789 , By Churchill GibsonBristol Parish (Va.), Chamberlayne Published 1898 Priv. print. [by W.E. Jones]
Lambeth's birth was possibly before 1720 when there no records found of Bristol parish. But more likely he was born late in 1722 to very early in 1723 during the time that the records are missing as noted above.
Here is a another clue that places LAMBETH TYE as a son of Allen Tye:
Dinwiddie County Fee Book of 1763, p. 66."Mary Tyeand Lambeth Tye, executors of Allen Tye, dec'd."
We know that Lambert Tye died in 1728. He had a son, Allen Tye b.c.1695-1700. Allen Tye must have had a son named Lambeth. Being the eldest son, he would naturally have been a likely executor.
Here is one other mention of Lambeth who is shown as Lambuth in this notice that appeared in the Virginia Gazette:
1779 “Taken up, on Mowhipponock creek, Dinwiddie county, a small flea-bitten horse, has a small bell on, about 4 feet 4 inches high, not branded, some dark spots on his breast, and appears to be 12 or 14 years old. App(r)aised to 50l. (!!) Lambuth Tye” Virginia Gazette. Publisher: Dixon Page: 3, Column: 2, 1779-05-08. Lambeth would be around age 60 by now. Seems that Lambeth probably lived along this creek where he found the horse.
It is interesting to note that years before Lambeth was born, his great grandfather, Richard Tye also had property along Mowhipponock creek.
I've found nothing else yet to further qualify my guesses and conclusions placed here. Hope to hear from others researching these families.
