Uberstine and Uberstein is the name -- both spellings in English -- of a family that now has 1,031 members. See web page at: http://users.erols.com/smrogers. Follow links therein to Gelman chapter, a major branch. We have no documentation beyond oral tradition that Usher was from Ostroshitskiy Gorodok, which is in minskaya district, Belarus. One family had a kiddish cup inscribed "Gorodok," but even that has been lost. Usher had a brother, Lazar Elia, and his children also spoke of roots in Ostroshitskiy Gorodok. At least two daughters married men from Wolozin, and one of those was our Gelman: Moishe or Morris. A photo of him and his wife, Udasha, appears in our Gelman chapter. Examination of the two rolls of microfilm of death records from our shtetl -- the only records known, made available in NYC by the Mormon family history center -- yielded not one mention of our surname. The Russian Jewish scholar who examined both of these rolls noted that "the same handful of families shows up repeatedly," but their surnames bear no resemblance to ours. To recap the Gelman connection: Udasha Uberstine, daughter of Lazar Elia, married Moishe Gelman of Wolozin. Three of the Gelman offspring came to the USA: Ike, Lou, and Roshka. As for future contact, smrogers@erols.com is the Uberstine/Uberstein, while Joe Erber -- a grandson of Ike Gelman -- is the Gelman contact, at: joe_erber@hotmail.com. As Joe would say, to all cousins, "Zei Gesundt!"
