Some observations and questions concerning the roots of some UBER families of Mercer Co.:
1.) Concerning Catharine HARROLD b. ca. 1780-1784 (m. John Harvey UBER
b. 1775), I have posted a query in the HARROLD family forum:

To summarize, the process of elimination seems to rule out all of the children of the Westmoreland Co. George Christoper HARROLD and Marie Catherine PONTIUS line as possible parents of Catherine, with the exception of Daniel who married Marie GRIBBS (probably CRIBBS). I am wondering if anyone can support or refute the theory that Catharine was probably a daughter of Daniel HARROLD b. 1764 and Mary (Maria) Magdalena CRIBBS (b. 5 April 1764; parents = Johann Jacob KREBS b. 1730 and Sarah FEDELE b. 1735)?
2.) Concerning Mary Magdalena "SMITH/HEARLY" b. Bet. February 07 - August, 1794, spouse of Michael R. UBER Sr. b. February 20, 1781, it seems that Mary's maiden name is SMITH, and that she married a HEASLEY prior to marying Michael UBER, specifically Joseph HEASLEY, son of
Heinrich HAUSSLI b. 1736 Switzerland and Catherine UBER b. 1753 (probably Michael's Sister):

It may be that the German prounounciation of the surname was interpreted as "HEARLY" by later generations (q.v. Amsterdam Cemetery records:

Supporting information: in the 1850 Census for Springfield Tp., Schedules 28-29, the family of John HEASLEY is listed just before that of Michael R. and Magdalena UBER. In the census, Magdalene says that she is from Westmoreland Co.:
23 210 212 UBER, Michael 69 M Farmer 1200 Westmoreland, Pa.
24 210 212 UBER, Magdalene 55 F Westmoreland, Pa.
I have been checking some of the more obvious Mercer and Westmoreland SMITH families with no success- does anyone know of any early SMITH families from these counties that should be checked for a possible connection? I notice that notes from Nanci Hamilton Gerhaards indicate Jacob SMITH as a parent- does anyone have information on his family?
LDS records list a Jacob SMITH b. 1756 Harrolds, Westmoreland, Pa., father John or Hans George or Jurig Schmidt and Barbara Schaeffer as parents. Since the Ubers have the HARROLD connection, it would be interesting to know more about that family...
Note that the birth range I am showing for Mary Magdalena is calculated from the census enumeration date and tombstone information; either could be mistaken.
