In 1689 Joseph Udall received a gift of land from his grandfather Capt. Joseph Bayly. The land consisted of the Capt.'s farm including the uplands, dwelling house and out buildings. In 1689 Joseph Udall was a minor. The deed-of-gift specified that Joseph should learn to read and write by his majority. If Joseph had not learned to read and write by that time, the land was to be rented out to provide funds for Joseph's schooling. In the deed are also named two sisters of Joseph, Frances and Elizabeth. His sister Mary who was named in an earlier deed-of-gift to Phillip Udall from Capt. Bayly, is not named in 1689. The land was to pass to the heirs of Joseph Udall and aftward to his siblings and their heirs and finally, if all should die or no heirs born, the land would pass to the children of Capt. Bayly: Daniel, Steven and Sarah Barnes.
