Hi Eric: I can't help you with your particular Udell family in Michigan since they are not part of the line that I am working on. However with the name change I can claim some guilt since my family were part of the family that did change it to Udell. I know which generation did it but why I do not know. There were more that changed it then did not it appears. Have you seen the history on the family that descends from Dr. Lionel Udall on microfilm at the Latter Day Saints that can be ordered into any history centre? There are a few different family groups that exist with the name Udall/Udell other than the Dr. Lionel Udall family. Good luck with your hunt.
