Hi Eric, I think the spelling differences probably reflect the way the name was pronounced by each individual. People who wrote the name (clerks, ministers, census takers etc.)didn't have anything to go by except the way the name sounded to them. My father (and others in the family)pronounced the name "YOU-dall" but his father and brother put the accent on the other end and pronounced the same name "ya-DELL". They all spelled it the same, "Udall". I am of the opinion that all the current variations started from a common name and became modified by chance as language and locations changed. Lila
