Leon Reporter, Leon, Iowa December 1, 1904 The Centerville Citizen has the following notice of the death of MRS. GROTE N. UDELL, who years ago was a resident of Leon, MR. UDELL being for several years the editor of The Reporter. Last evening at 9 o'clock at her home on South Nineteenth Street, ocurred the death of one of Centerville's grandest women and most highly respected and honored citizens, MRS. G.N. UDELL, the caue of her death being a complication of diseases attendant to old age. The funeral services will be held from her late home tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. F.L. Moffett, of the Central Church of Christ and interment will be made in Oakland Park Cemetery. ROSANNA N. MILLER was born in Nelson, Ohio, May 7, l830, and was therefore at the time of death, 74 years, 5 months and 9 days of age. Her father died when she was six months of age and she was adopted by a family by the name of POPE, who lived at Lyons, New York, when she was six years old. She lived with the POPE family until she was married to that grand old war hero and victim of many wounds at the Shiloh battle, GROTIUS N. UDELL, February 24, l855, when they moved to Pella, Iowa, from which place they moved to Unionville, Iowa, in l857 and from there to Centerville, in l858, which has since been their home with the exception of a few years temporary residence in the west for the benefit of their health. She united with the Christian Church when sixteen years of age and has been a faithful and earnest Christian since. MRS. UDELL was a woman of exceptional qualities. Her husband has been an invalid, on account of his wounds received at Shiloh, for many years and she has had the charge of his care, performing it with faithfulness and sincerity that has shown the most remarkable devotion and love. Her death will be truly mourned by all her friends and the invalid husband who is left alone has the deepest sympathy of everybody. They have no children to share with him the grief at this time, which makes his loss all the greater and harder to bear. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ The funeral services of MRS. G.N. UDELL were held this afternoon from her late home on South l9th Street, conducted by Rev. F.L. Moffett, of the Central Church of Christ. Interment was made in Oakland Park Cemetery. This was an especially sad funeral and brought great grief to many to see the invalid husband looking for the last time upon the face of his beloved companion of fifty years. He is alone in the world and unable to take a step or make a movement without the help of other hands than his own, and the companion who so lovingly assisted him for so long is with him no more. While this grand old hero of Shiloh has lost his best friend and true companion, he must rejoice in the realization that he is surrounded by a host of friends who offer their deepest sympathy. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert August 6, 2003 http://www.rootsweb.com/~iadecatu Notify Administrator about this message?
