Absolutely! Joseph was arrested in the infamous Montgomery's Tavern incident in the rebellion of 1837 (December) north of Toronto on Yonge Street. He was subsequently released from Jail. I believe most of the family moved south into the USA primarily because of the rebellion. Joseph was the third son of John and Margaret (Brown) Udell who served for 5 years with the Cameronian Regiment, they lived briefly in the Niagara region in the late 1700's prior to moving to the Pickering and Markham area. John's father, Mathew Udell served tfor close to 35 years with the Green Howards and with the Cameronian Regiment. They came to Canada with the regiment in 1787. I believe they they were from Ellastone in Staffordshire where they can be traced back to 1640 (marriage of John Udall and Elizabeth Bull). I have more information on a web site at Familytree. If you search for Mathew Udell it should come up.
