I am seeking background information on the UDNY family recorded in the 1881 British Census as living at Leamington Priors, Warwickshire, with a household of mainly Scottish servants; and a visitor.
My main interest is in the Butler, EVAN (Baillie Fraser) TANT. (This satisfies a family legend of there being a Butler somewhere, some time.)
He is an ancestral relative, on whom I have some data; but more may help me pin down the precise origins of his TANT Ancestry in the London area via the North of Scotland.
In this Census he is recorded as being married; but with no signs of his wife and family in that area.
Subsequently, I found his wife and family recorded in the same Census under the erroneous name LANT, obviously a mis-rendering by someone of TANT; but up in Aberdeenshire, not far from Udny Castle and Udny Green, although not in the immediate proximity.
Interestingly, his wife is recorded as being a "Farmer's Wife", so raising the question as to why Evan was employed as a Butler down in Warwickshire.
I have my own suspicions as to possible explanations; but would prefer proper evidence to sort the situation out, as it may also give a lead as to the unusual namings used in the extended Scottish TANT family of that era.
