Thanks Sue and William.

William - you've set me a real mystery! Eliza, John and Andrew in Birmingham are undoubtedly Charles' first family and very much alive after his second marriage. I'm still unable to find a marriage for Charles and Eliza so more digging needed there. This could however be the first scandal I've managed to find in the family (it was all becoming a bit boring so I'm quite pleased really!).

The marriage certificate for Charles and his second wife Emma state he was a widower which he quite clearly wasn't. I think the reason for him and Eliza parting company was the death of their daughter aged 2 but why state 'widower' on his second marriage certificate? He moved to another part of the country and presumably could have kept completely quite about his first family. He doesn't appear to have had parents or siblings so I image he could have completely re-invented himself.

How I wish my father was alive so I could have asked him if he knew about his grandfather's skeleton in the closet!
