Hello, I am researching two family members who were Quartermasters in the British Merchant Marine - I have this information from their marriage certs. However I have hit somewhat of a brick wall when looking for details of their time in the MM. The first is George (Richard?) Dodson who married in 1905, aged 25, son of George Dodson (Doctor of Medicine). The second is Frederick Gordon Connor who married in 1908 aged 22, father Edward Richard Connor, Commander Royal Navy. Interestingly, both men married the same lady! On the second marriage she claimed to be a widow, but I can find no death or divorce of George Dodson, so maybe she was a bit naughty there. I can find no other records of George Dodson senior or junior. I know that Frederick Connor was born in Australia in 1895 and later joined the Royal Australian Navy, and I have found his father's RN record. I am trying to trace their movements. Can anyone assist or direct me to where I could find records of Merchant Mariners from 1900-1912? I am in Australia, so I can't visit any UK records offices unfortunately. Also, I believe that Quartermasters were in effect the helmsmen, is that correct? I think I have a picture of George Dodson - was there a standard uniform for QMs? All help greatly appreciated thanks David Notify Administrator about this message?
