A biography/family history of William M. Ulm, Montana pioneer, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 2, pages 684 & 695. William's ancestors were German colonists who settled in Pennsylvania prior to the Revolutionary War, and subsequent members of the family were early residents of Ohio.

William M. Ulm was born, 8 Feb 1862, the only child of Wiliam H. and Martha J. (Williams) Ulm. The father, William H., was born in Rosswell, IN, in 1841, was raised and married there. He owned a store in Indiana. In the fall of 1878, he located to Montana and homesteaded eleven miles from Great Falls, eventually acquiring 1,000 acres. Ulm, MT, is named in his honor. In 1882, he was a general merchandiser at Helena but sold out in 1885 and returned to his ranch. In 1896, he retired to Long Beach, CA, living there for five years before returning to Indiana. He died at Frankfort, IN, in 1914.

William M. was educated in the schools of Frankfort, IN, and came to Montana in 1879. He completed high school in Helena, MT, and in 1883 studied accounting under private tutors. He assisted his father in business until 1885, then established a store of his own at Elkhorn, MT, conducting it for three years. Following that, he was a partner with Dr. Charles K. Cole as a stock rancher at Ennis, MT, until 1893. He then resumed the mercantile business at Toston, MT, and developed the largest store in that section of the state. He sold it in 1906 and moved to Ely, NV, and became purchasing agent for the Ely Townsite Company. From Nevada, William moved to Long Beach, CA, in 1911, and spent nine months recuperating his health. He was then called to NY to assist his brother-in-law, Dr. Charles K. Cole in supervising the estate that Dr. Cole was establishing on the banks of the Hudson River. After two years, the climate not fitting to him, he returned to Lewistown, MT, where he was an accountant and manager for the Grass Range Mercantile Co, and in Sep 1918, moved to Musselshell as auditor of the Musselshell Mercantile Co.

At Helena, MT, 11 Feb 1884, William M. married Miss Lula E. Cole, born in Illinois, sister of Dr. Charles K. Cole.
