Heidi:
I have been away for 3 weeks. Charles Ulm's father was Emile Gustav Ulm, thought to have been born in Paris in about 1863, but we have never found his birth record. Emile's father was Emile Victor Frederick Ulm who was an artist. Quoting from the Canadian online gallery Art of the Print: "Highly regarded for both his etchings and his paintings, Emile Ulm studied art in Paris under Gleyre and Gues. Gaining his reputation firstly as an artist of fruit and flower still lives, he was also a gifted portraitist and figure painter. During the 1860's, Ulm's work was regularly exhibited at the prestigious Salon of Paris. He also contributed several original etchings to the Societe des Aqua-fortistes from 1864 to 1866."
Art of the Print told us they have information that Emile was born in Rochefort, Charente Maritime, France, although they do not know the source of that information and I have failed to fine any record of his birth there in Rochefort church records.
The information we have is so uncertain I will not be surprised if they came from elsewhere, perhaps even Austria. I can send you a FTM generated genealogy report on this Ulm family but I will need you email address and I will also be very interested to see what family history you have on your Ulms.
Best wishes,
