Thanks so much for the response.

According to my Dad's birth certificate, my grandmother Margaret Ulrich Appleton was 31 years old in 1925. The family lived on Quincy Street in Brooklyn. I think she was actually older than 31 because my grandfather was supposedly younger than she and he was born in 1895.

She died in childbirth a few years later and the family was split up: my uncle Frank went to live with the Appletons and my Dad Howard lived temporarily with the Ulrichs until my grandfather remarried and moved to Syracuse, NY.

There may have been another child besides my father and uncle.

According to "legend," the Ulrichs did not want to give my Dad up.

Interestingly, one photo I have of the Ulrichs shows four young women with an older woman, presumably their mother.
