If there is a connection, I haven't found it yet.I was sure my Umphrey's would be found in this area.My g grandfather, Emmet Arnold, son of Emma (Umphrey) Arnold was married and lived in Sanilac Co., where his children were born. They moved to Coleman, Midland Co. in the 1890's.
Family history says Emma was adamant about the UMPHREY spelling of her surname, but it is as often spelled HUMPHREY, depending on which document one looks, including Civil War pension documents, which is where I found verification her father was Ervin. However, her brother, Algernon (A.E.), who also lived in Coleman used the Umphrey spelling.
My Umphrey line came from New York, where Emma was born c. 1840.The family moved to Macomb Co., where Emma married Abram Arnold in 1858.He died in the Civil War.She married Hiram Richardson in Macomb Co. in 1873.They moved to Tuscola Co., where Emma died in 1918 and is buried.
Everything I have found about the Umphrey's in Sanilac Co. says they came from Ontario.Mathew Umphrey had a daughter named Lucinda. The date would be about right for your g grandmother.I did quite a bit of research on this Umphrey family before I found my (H)Umphrey line, so I may be able to help if you need more information.
