Hello Cousin!
My Grandfather was Charles Marion Underdown (1902-1971) he was one of Noah's older brothers.Noah Underdown (Sept 15th 1909 - Aug 22nd 1979) is buried at Plumlee Cemetery in Madison County.Noah's father was Joseph (Sometimes listed as Josephus) Underdown(abt 1857-abt 1939) He was born in Sevier County Tenn. His mother was Susan Georgiann Bateman Underdown.(abt 1869-abt 1949)She was born in Arkansas and her parents were Jessee Bateman (15 Jun 1835 North Carolina -21 Feb 1910 Boone County, AR)and Anna ????.
Joseph Underdown's father was William Reece Underdown (abt 1829 - abt 1916.)William seems to have gone by "Reece".He's buried in White Church Cemetery northeast of Gaither Arkansas as "Reace" Underdown. His grave is next to his brother Pleasant Lee Underdown (May 13 1827 - Apr 12 1881).Pleasant was the first Underdown in Arkansas. He caught Tuberculosis while serving in the Union Army during Civil War. He move to Boone County because of his health.Joseph Underdown's mother was Angeline Hickman Underdown(abt 1830 - abt 1886).Her family ties into the Bales/Beals family and they go back to Charlemagne!
William Reece Underdown's father was Stephen A Underdown (abt 1794 to abt 1865) and Martha McCleary Underdown (abt 1803 - 1856).They lived in Sevier County, Tennessee near the French Broad River.I've seen stories that say he was a Steamboat Captain on the Tennessee River.I know someone in the family ran a ferry boat across the French Broad River. There's a place called "Underdown's Ferry" on the French Broad River.I'm not sure who's right. The 1860 census lists his occupation as running Grocery store.
Stephen A Underdown's Father was Stephen Underdown(June 9th 1755 to abt 1838)He was a Revolutonary War Soldier having served in the North Carolina Militia from 1775 - 1782
We seems to be descended from that Stephen Underdown's 2nd wife Elizabeth (Betty) Leisenering.First wife Mary Elizabeth Edwards died around 1780.Stephen and Betty Leisenering's first husband were close friends.Stephen married Betty after her husband was killed in the "Little Turtle War."
Stephen Underdown's father was George Underdown who came to Virginia in 1738.George Underdown worked in the tobacco fields for 7 years to pay for his passage and got a land grant in Orange County,Virgina after the time was up.
Thrall Morrow has done some outstanding research on the first Stephen Underdown,She's descended from Stephen's daughter Mary "Polly" Underdown.
