High sheriff of Staffordshire
To interessted persons,
I live in Clough Hall - a small suburb- in north staffs, which is on the site of Simon Unwyn's Hall, when he was High sheriff. He died 1677 and was succeeded by an Unwinrelative from Hampshire. But the Unwins go back a lot further here abouts in Ravenscliffe, Kidsgrove and Hardingswood. There was also an obviously wealthy Cyprian Unwin recorded at Talke (Audley parish) a mile away, in the 1666 Hearth tax - nine hearths in his home. There is also a big court court case in Queen ELIZABETH'S TIME (pre 1600) between related Unwins over tree clearance in the Ravenscliffe area. You come across the name regularly in old records in North Staffs.
