Hi Peggy- The Brokaw/Brokow/Brogaw family(same as Tom Brokaw) settled in Newton,Long Island, which is near LaGuarida Airport, and there is,I understand, still a Newtown High School there. The Updikes/etc/etc also settled there, and the Larisons, etc. When the Brokaws migrated to NJ, somehow John Updike met Mary Brogaw who, was a member of the Burgoon Bouchard family, perhaps a daughter. They were married and "got" a farm among the Brokaw/Bouchard farms of the Rariton River area in NY. I believe the records of these families are in the hands of the Presbyterian Church in Newtown which town is now called Elmhurst.that this is basically true is verified also by the fact that the Updykes who went up to the Finger Lakes named Children Burgeon/Brogoon Updike. There were also Brokaws up there as well. Still many Updikes are in the area around Truman'sburg,NY and on up between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake. I have just corresponded with an old,old widow whose husband was John Updike.
