I neglected to mention above that some more circumstantial evidence in favor of the Virginia Updikes descending from the Rhode Island Updikes is the fact that John's son Rufus had a grandson named Smith Newton Updike (1832-1917), who was born when Rufus was still alive. Because Gysbert Updike of New York and Rhode Island married Catherine Smith who had a nephew named Smith Newton whose sister Abigail married her fist cousin Lodowick Updike (Gysbert's son), I cannot help but wonder if this suggests a connection. Of course, I have seen instances before in which someone had the first name Smith but it was not a family surname; however, the occurrence of the name combination Smith Newton is strongly suggestive. Smith Newton Updike was a son of Eden Updike by his first wife, Kerziah Potts, daughter of Amos and Lydia Potts, and it is possible those surnames occur on her side of the family, though.
In the 1889 Opdyck Genealogy, under the biography of Richard Smith, Jr. in small print, there is mention of his will which lists Smith Newton almost next to Lodowick Updike.
Eden Updike's children were not known to the authors of either the 1889 or 1985 Opdyck-Updike genealogies, probably because he settled in Ohio early on, but a descendant of Eden has furnished his name and information to several Updike websites.
