Upp-McIlvain Family Bible

Many years ago, my grandparents received a family bible in the mail from the Carolinas. My grandparents lived in Philadelphia at the time, and they were the only Upps that the mailers found in the phonebook. Last week, they gave me the bible. Here are the contents of the bible, with some of my own notes and thoughts at the bottom. Everything is exactly as it was written, as best as I could make out.

Sarah C
died ???? (Sept?)

The bible was published in 1854 in Philadelphia. The family itself seems to be from York County, PA. There is census information from the 1850s that place them in York County, and a few mentions of George Upp Jr. being elected as a Postmaster for York County on July 2, 1841.

The entry for Sarah Welsh (nee Spangler) seemed out of place. It was written in a different handwriting, and with all the Upp children listed there, it didn't make much sense. After a bit of research, it seems that Sarah Spangler was an aunt of Eliza Ann McIlvain. Eliza Ann is the daughter of William Andrew McIlvain and Juliana Spangler. Sarah Spangler was a sister to Juliana, and her second husband was Michael Welsh.

The list of birth dates for the McIlvains are the brothers and sisters of Eliza Ann.

The final entry for Sarah C on the list of dates of death does not have any year, just a month, which looks like it may be September... it's hard to make out, but it looks very much like the "Sept" written above for Eliza Ann.

I'm not sure who Virginia Helen Upp married. I'm guessing it may be G. Edgar Johnson, or that may be a son. But in the census informatoin I've found, Virginia Helen shows up with her children Emma and Louise W., but no husband.

The list of births for Upp children is in one handwriting, with the rest of the book in a different handwriting. The entry for Sarah Welsh is a completely different handwriting.

I have not gone page by page through the bible yet to see if there any passages marked or anything included in the bible. There is an old obituary stapled to one of the pages (it does not refer to any of the names I've already found in the Bible, and there is no date on it unfortunately), and a religious tract in between two other pages. The bible itself is falling apart, and I'm trying to do my best to keep it in one piece. I will post any new information I may find.

Hope this helps someone!
