I need some help. I'm researching Charles Clarence Carson of Hamilton Co., IN. I was told the parents of Charles Clarence Carson (b. 1876) were FNU Carson and Margaret Urban. The family lived in Hamilton Co., IN. I found Charles' father, John Sanford Carson. I found a Margaret Urban, dau. of Christian and Sophia/Sofia [Cleopfur] Urban, with a sister, Mary Elizabeth on the 1860 & 1870 Hamilton Co., IN census records. I have a marriage record of John Carson and Maggie Urban of the same location. Pe Indiana Deaths, 1882-1920, John Sanford Carson died November 29, 1900 at age 46.
Here is where I am confused -- when searching for John Sanford Carson on the 1860 Hamilton Co., IN census there is an Alexander Carson with son John S., age 3. My John should have been 6 or 7, since I have his birthdate from the 1900 census as 1853. I would have dismissed this as not my John, but there is a Hamilton Jacobs, age 16, living with John, Margaret and their children, Charley, Frank, Bert, Murl (s/b Merle) and Mary. When I found Christian Urban's will record, it meantions a daughter, Margaret Jacobs. The will record reads as follows:
Urban, Christian, Sr., of White River Twp. Will dated 9 Apr. 1877; proved 5 Jan. 1882. Legatees: wife, Sophiah; daus. Sarah Cook, Margaret Jacobs, Elizabeth Urban; children of daus. Exec. George Kreag. Wit: William R. Thomas, William Neal. Will Record E, pp. 307-309.
The problem is, since John died in 11/1900 (he was with the family on the 1900 census), why is Margaret listed as a Jacobs? She was 18 when she married John Carson and is on every other census record until 1930 as Margaret Carson.
Does anyone have any idea as to why she would be listed as Jacobs in her father's will, or know what connection the Jacobs family has to the Urban's?
