John Urie Murdered 1685
While I was brousing through a Glasgow website I came across the following item which some of you may be interested in,I have put it down exactly as it is written
During the Covenanting period it was here that three weavers were killed/murdered. Theyare buried in Cathcart Old Churchyard with a plaque telling the story
This is the stone tomb of Robert Thorn, Thomas Cook, and John Urie, martyrs for ouning the covenanted work of reformation the11th of May 1685
The bloody murderers of these men
Were Major Balfour and Captain Maitland;
With them others were not frie,
Caused them to search in Polmadie.
As soon as they had them out found
They murthered them with shots of guns;
Scarce time did they them allow
Before their Maker their knees to bow.
Many like in this land have been
Whose blood for wingeance cries to Heaven.
This cruel wickedness yow see
Was done in lon of Polmadie.
This shall a standing witness be
Twixt Presbytrie and Prelacie.
Polmadie is in Glasgow but it borders with Rutherglen.
