My immigrant John Urwin - gallia Co., Ohio

As I mentioned in my previous post, I would like to give a run-down on my family from the immigrant for several generations, I hope that all of the visitors to this forum will do the same.

My line in the United States begins with John Urwin b. 7-4-1814 in the Newcastle area in Durham Co., England. One of John's obituaries says that he came to the U.S. in 1832 but there are some other errors in that obit so who really knows when he actually came over. Another obit states that he landed at Pittsburg ??.

I do know for certain that John Urwin was in Bethel Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio on Feb. 1, 1838 when he signed a device with William Beeney to rent a coal bank from Richard Thomas. He paid "a half a cent per bushell for every bushell taken from the bank for the 5 year term".

In the 1840 census of Gallia Co., one male 20-30 by the name of John Ervin with 2 females in the household this would be his wife Sarah pritchett (20-30) and a female under 5 this would be his oldest daughter (Betsy).

In 1847, a device was recorded where John and wife Sarah were disposing of a ten acre lot that Sarah Pritchard received in 1845 from the estate of her father John Pritchard. The land was conveyed to James Riggs and was signed by John (signature) and Sarah (her mark) in April 1847.

On 9-27-1849, John married Eleanor (Barker ) Toddoff in Gallia Co. She was the daughter of Thomas White Barker and Diana Weise, as well as the widow of Joseph Toddoff.

On 11-13-1849 John received his certificate of naturalization from the Gallia Co., circuit court.

In the 1850 census he appears as John Irvine (36 yrs) with wife Emily (34 yrs) and children Mary E. (5 yrs), Sarah J. (4 yrs), John (2 yrs) and Thomas (7/12 yrs). Also in the household are Louisa (11 yrs), Josephine (11 yrs) and Diana (5 yrs) Toddoff. This census is for Kanawha Co., Virginia. As near as I can decide, this is directly across the Ohio river from Bethel Twp., Gallia Co.

In 1860, he and his family are in Cheshire Twp., Gallia Co., as shown in the census as follows John Urwin (45), Eleanor (43), Louisa Toddoff (20), Josephine Toddoff (20), Mary E. Urwin (15), Sarah J. (13), John (12), Thomas (10), Washington G. (8), America J. (6), Robert P. (3) and Hiram J. (3).

In 1870, in Mercerville, Gallia Co., he appears as John Irwin(56), Elenor (53), Washington (18), America (15), Robert (13) and Hram (13).

And in 1880 he is shown as John Erwin (68), Elenor (64), Thomas, Robert, Hiram and Washington. This is the first census that shows his occupation as something other than collier or coal miner, it has his as a farmer and all the boys as miners.

John died 3-23-1898 in Bladen, Gallia Co., and is buried in the Bethel Church cemetery there. Eleanor died 2-16-1896 and is buried with John (they share a rather large headstone).

I also have a copy of the Family pages of what appears to be John Urwin's bible. It reads:

John Urwin was born July 4th 1814
Sarah Ann Urwin was born May 8th 1821
Betsy Urwin was born December 2nd 1839
Michel Urwin was born Febuary 2nd 1841
William Urwin was born June 28th 1842
Mary Elenor Urwin was born May 4th 1845
Sarah Jane Urwin was born Oct 21st 1846
John Urwin was born June 5th 1848
Eleanor Urwin was born December 2nd 1815
Thommas Urwin was born July 15th 1850
Washington Winfield Urwin was born Juen 25th 1852
America Isabella Ann Urwin was born September 16th 1854
Robert Parmley Urwin and Hiram Isaac Urwin was born June 23, 1857.

I have found no information on Sarah Ann's death and the fate of the oldest 3 children. I have not found any census for them, so I have always assumed that they died. Sarah between 4-1847 and 9-27-1849 and the three children sometime between their births and 1850.

I have several obituaries for John.

My next post will be the spouses and children of John's children as well as what I have on Eleanor's children by her first marriage.
