Searching ancestor

Hello everybody,

I'm searching for my ancestor Johann Diedrich RINGE (different spelling possible:John Ringe, or John D. Ringe,...)
J.D. Ringe was born in Germany (abt. 1810-1815) and emigrated around 1835 to US. Our family chronicle tells he took part in the Mexican War, but doen't mention any details.
How and where can I research if, where and as what he took part in this war?

Regards

Wolf-Dieter
(Germany)
