Where to get info on ancestor, Musician, Volunteer

My ancestor John Roques was a drum major in the Mexican War. He volunteered. Possibly at St. Louis, or New Orleans. I have been unable to find him on any rosters or other info. Would appreciate any info. or suggestions.
