In the index to Mexican War pension applications there is:

NEWTON, Charles B. Filed for pension 9 May 1887 in Colorado, Soldier's Certificate SC5389, for his service in Co. G, 1st US Voltigeurs.

I hope this helps. You should be able to obtain his pension file from the NARA.
