were families notified?

The story in the family says my great great grandfather, ??Brown, left his family to fight in the Mexican War and never returned. It was never said he died, only that he didn't return. Were families notified when a death occurred? Or is it quite possible granddaddy went to California?
I don't really have much hope of finding him. With a name like Brown, he could be anybody! But I like to create possibilies, you know?

Family story also said he was killed defending the Alamo, but the Browns I've found who died there do not fit the bill.

One more history question: The Texan Rebellion, I believe, was before the start of War with Mexico. Would volunteers have left before 1845 to fight?

Thank you!
