Hinds in US-Mex War

I am looking for some help finding records of enlistment in the US-Mex War for William C Hinds. I recently found an old ledger belonging to my grandfather, his entries are dated starting in 1909 through 1922. Up until I found this treasure I was unable to trace my Hinds Genealogy. According to my grandfathers notes his grandfather, William C Hinds, traveled from Allegheny R(river?)PA to New Orleans and enlisted in Louisiana. He returned to PA and died in 1853 or 54 at the age of ABT 51 years old. His wife, Ellen BURNSIDE Hinds, had died in 1846. Any help to lead me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. I am new to genealogy research on the internet. Thank You
