JACOB VARNES-CHAPULTEPEC

Trying to determine origin, ancestors, descendants of Pvt. Jacob Varnes, wounded "slightly" in Battle(s) of Chapultepec and Mexico City, Sept. 13-14, 1847. Believe he was in First Division, Third Infantry. Also, to obtain service records from NARA, need to know whether he was a volunteer or a regular in the Army. Anybody help? Thanks for whatever you can supply, hopefully with sources documented. John D. Varnes
