Insignia identification help?

I have an old insignia and not sure if it was from the Mexican War. Family lore said it belonged to a gt-grandfather.

It is old and not alot of it left to work from. It is apx 3 inches round, with old brittle cardboard backing. On top of the cardboard is a layer of old cotton and on tp of that there used to be rows upon rows of sequins (blackish in color) that have long since been ripped off from tossing it about loosely in a box of buttons. Centered is a 5 point star with a raised center. The star is made from what looks like twisted brass wires in a spiral pattern.
If anyone thinks they can help identify this article, please email me.

I have checked alot of online sites, but have not found anything close to this. thanks
