JOSEPH HEATON

My great-great grandfather, Joseph Heaton, was in the Mexican War. I have placed queries to find what state and what company he was in. He was born and spent most of his life in Ohio, however, he did live a short time in Indiana, because his first child was born there in 1859.
One woman sent me the information that she found him listed from Mississippi. I have sent for his records, however, I received a negative search, because this Joseph Heaton had been killed in the war. I have tried to find rosters online but of no help. Joseph was born around 1820 in Ohio and died after 1910. From 1860 through 1910 census he was in Putnam County Ohio. The 1890 census listed him in Putnam and he was listed as a U.S. Soldier, not a Civil War Veteran. Can anyone guide me to finding the information I need to enable me to obtain his records?
Any and all assistance will be gratefully appreciated.
Linda-Ohio
