Joseph William Hollis..Mexican War??

I need help with an ancestor. Joseph Hollis was born 1814 and died 1888, in Berkeley Co., (W) Va. I have a copy of a bounty land warrant from the state of Virginia, dated 1850.
The cover letter accompaning the warrant addresses Joseph as "Capt. Joseph W. Hollis". I have not been able to find any record of his military service, but if I understand the granting of bounty land warrants they were for military service. Any help would be appreciated.
