The Maine Historical Society in Portland, ME has a photo of some of the Portland men who fought in the Mexican War and one of them is my ancestor Joel Bibber (I think he is the one on the end with the long beard). He is buried in the Eastern Cem. in Portland, Maine and Always lived in Portland...however his brother Charles Bibber who fought during the Civil War and was a Medal of Honor recipient for his deeds done on the ship Agawam, lived in MA, so perhaps Joel did join up in a MA comp. of men.
That is interesting that you cannot seem to find out that info. As all of my ancestors and relatives are from Maine I will keep my eyes peeled for any info regarding the subject.
Good Luck in your searching.
