Hi again JoanieB:
Yes, I will keep the "Melrose" in mind. I used to do lots of research on ships and their sinkings when I was a kid; people were writing (no computers then) from everywhere wanting me to look up information and send it to them, so my mother told me "enough is enough" and that was the end of that. I'm sorry that a prominent local historian died in 1998 and I didn't talk to him more often about things like this.

I'm 99% certain without looking for information that Ellenwood was a military or similar person who was given a grant of land. The place where the resort used to be, and the park now is found, looks like it was an estate at one time in the past.

I chuckle watching the blizzards in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Mass when we are having 1) rain or 2) nothing in particular. Since 1990, we have had about 2 winters with any snow at all. In fact, it has been TOO DRY both in winter and summer.

While we do not have palm trees in NS, we DO grow wine grapes, tobacco and peaches in many areas. If I want to guard against frost, I can cover my plants and veggies with a glass plate and let the sun keep them warm between December and late February. The grass stays green and flowers bloom until the first snowfall (if there is one), and the first flowers are usually popping up late in Feb or early in March. I can truly say that our seasons are almost exactly like the calendar: that is, spring by March, winter by December (usually a light snowfall by Xmas Day or New Years, but almost always has melted away in a day or two). Average daily temps in Jan are still just above freezing, with lots of bright sunshine (we are just below 44° North Latitude which is the same as the French Riviera or Northern Italy).More Replies:
