My grandfather Frank Crews was born in Covington, Alleghany county, Va 12/26/1904. He had 4 siblings: Robert the oldest, next Susan (then my grandfather) and a set of twins Paul and Pauline. Their mother was Lilley Martin Crews, her parents were Algie and Susan Martin. Lilley was also born in Alleghany county sometime between 1875 and 1881. The problem I'm having is locating her husband. As I checked the US census for this family, I noticed in 1900 Algie and Susan Martin were listed with their 9 children, Lilley being the oldest and still single her age approximated at 25. The 1910 US census shows Algie and Susan with 8 of their 9 children listed. Lilley is listed also under her married name Lilley Crews, age 29 and her 5 children, the oldest age 8 and the twins age 3. By 1920 the only Crews' remaining in the Martin household were the twins at age 11.
I'm estimating that Lilley was married to a Crews sometime between 1900 and 1902. I've heard family stories that my grandfather's parents died young as their absence from the census may support this. I'm also guessing that since my grandfather was a coal miner, his father may have been a miner also. Perhaps he died in a mine accident between 1907 and 1910, there were a few of these accidents in Virginia and West Virgina during those times.
I'm trying to find the name of my Great-Grandfather Crews who married Lilley Martin. If anyone has any information on this family or, how I may be able to locate this person in my family line, please don't hesitate to contact me. I'm willing to travel to Alleghany county if need be. Thank you.
