Hello. Below is my file on the Kincaid family of southern WV, but specifically please view the JONES section. Angelina JONES was an 11-year-old SERVANT in the home of JAMES FITZGERALD in Alleghany CO., VA census, 1880. I know she was related to other Alleghany JONES somehow. NOTE NEW EMAIL: dkuhn2@charter.net Thanks! (Scottish) WILLIAM de KYNCADE de CRAIGLOCART, d. c. 1447. ROBERT de KYNCADE de EODEM, b. c. 1410, Campsie, Scotland. Sons: DONALD, William DONALD KINCAID, b. c. 1430. Son: David DAVID KINCAID, b. c. 1450, Campsie, Scotland. Son: JOHN JOHN KINCAID, b. c. 1470, m. _____? WALTERSTONE. SON: THOMAS THOMAS KINCAID, b. Coates, Scotland. M. ELIZABETH BONCLE. Constable of Edinburgh Castle from 1508 through 1513. Oversaw preparations made at Edinburgh Castle for the invasion of England in 1513, including the casting of cannons. Because of this, the Kincaid coat of arms is displayed on a corbel among the rafters of the Great Hall of Edinburgh Castle. (I did not know this when I visited the Castle a few years ago, so did not look for it) Thomas probably died in the battle of Flodden; in any event, he died in or before 1517. Sons: THOMAS, John and David THOMAS KINCAID, b. c. 1510. Campsie. D. after 1545, Edinburgh, Scotland. Deputy Constable in Parliament , 1534. M. MARGARET SETON, b. c. 1525, dtr. of Ninian Seton. Son: JAMES JAMES KINCAID, b. c. 1550, d. 1603, Edinburgh. M. CHRISTIAN LESLIE on 1-26-1570, dtr of George Leslie and Christian Wood. George Leslie (and thus all the Kincaids after this generation) was a direct descendant of Robert “The Bruce,” King of Scotland who reigned from 1306-1329, and of the Stewart royal family. Son: JAMES JAMES KINCAID, m. MARGARET HAMILTON, dtr. of Robert Hamilton and ___? Kincaid. Son: JAMES JAMES KINCAID, b. c. 1635, Campsie, Scotland. Son: JAMES JAMES KINCAID, b. c. 1650, d. 1700. Sons: David, ALEXANDER, Thomas, James, William ALEXANDER KINCAID, b. c. 1670, Edinburgh. A pharmacist by trade. He was a supporter of the cause of Prince Charles Edward and Scottish independence from England. Four of his sons fought for Scottish independence, were captured by the English in 1745, and escaped to America, sailing from Glasgow to Philadelphia and traveling on to Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1746. Son: SAMUEL SAMUEL KINCAID, b. Scotland, D. Augusta Co., VA. Escaped English capture, came to Pennsylvania with 3 brothers and migrated down Shenendoah Valley into Augusta Co., VA. Son: JOHN JOHN KINCAID m. ANN GRAHAM, dtr. of JOHN GRAHAM and F. ELIZABETH WALKUP. Son: SAMUEL, other children include Andrew, David, Francis, James, Joseph, Thomas, Mary and Lancelot (Lanty). SAMUEL KINCAID, b. c. 1767, VA, m. 1. MARY TINCHER and 2. Hulda Osborn (dtr. Of John Osborn) on 3-13-1802, Greenbrier Co. (W)VA., We are descended from the Mary Tincher union. Samuel had two sons he named Thomas, one from each marriage. The eldest was known as “MOUNTAIN TOM” (our ancestor) and the younger was known as “King Tom.” Other children with Mary Tincher include Matthew, John, and Samuel Jr. Other children with Hulda Osborn include Deborah, Hulda, William and James. THOMAS (MOUNTAIN TOM) KINCAID, b. c. 1795, d. 1875, m. MARY “POLLY” WITHROW. I’ve not been able to further trace Mary Withrow’s family. Mountain Tom had a family with Mary in Fayette County, WV and then abandoned this family to move to Lewis County, WV and have a second family with Lucinda Claypoole, who he never married. We are descended from his marriage with Mary. Their children include: Alice (m. John Tinker), Andrew (, Ursula__), Frank, John, Elizabeth( m. ANGELINE T. (“Annie”) JONES in Fayette Co. WV on 9-29-1890. Children include MARGARET ELIZABETH, William Cecil (m. Maudie Coleman), Lolla, (M. George Amos) and Lovey (d. 1-12-1939 of pneumonia, unmarried.) The couple lived at Sewell and Mossy. In latter years, Ed and Annie did not live together. He lived near Kingston WV and is probably buried there; Annie lived at Mossy and with her children. Supposedly, Annie, who was Catholic, wanted to be remarried in a Catholic church and Ed refused. MARGARET ELIZABETH KINCAID, b. Sewell, grew up at Mossy, m. ULYSSES S. “JACK” (COON) KUHN at Peachtree, Raleigh Co., in 1917, d. 11-1965. DTR: ELIZABETH HAY, b. 1367, m. GEORGE LESLIE II. BRUCE (Royal family of Scotland) I will begin this family as far back as its ancestors have been traced, with, believe it or not, an ancient Viking King of Sweden born in the year 214. It remains in Scandinavia for hundreds of years, then moves to Orkney, an island off northern Scotland, with a little Russian, French and Irish (including a King of Ireland) thrown in for good measure. It then winds its way through Robert the Bruce, first king of a unified Scotland, and down to the Stewarts, concluding with Elizabeth, who married Thomas Hay. You will note that passing last names down to descendants is a relatively recent practice. Each individual down the list is the son or daughter of the person listed above, regardless of the similarity, or lack of same, in the name. His heart, however, was taken on a Crusade by Sir James Douglas who, just before dying in battle fighting the Moors in Spain, threw it at the enemy. It was later recovered and buried in a lead casket at Melrose Abby. Archeologists found it in 1992 and re-buried it with a stone over the spot with the inscription “A noble hart may hae nae ease, gif freedom failye” or, “A noble heart may have no ease if freedom fail.” Robert took command at the death of William (“Braveheart”) Wallace and successfully united Scotland and fought back the English King Edward by defeating his army at Stirling on June 24, 1314. Robert married Isabella of Mar, and then Elizabeth de Burgh. MARJORIE BRUCE, Princess of Scotland, m. From “High Steward,” comes the name Stewart. See STEWART line, below. STEWART (Royal family of Scotland) The name Stewart comes from the title “Steward,” their names were originally some form of “Walter.” “Fitz” could mean “son of” or “grandson of.” They were French before Norman Conquest. John and Lucy moved to Rockbridge Co, then Greenbrier Co., then Fayette Co., then near Chillicothe, Ohio for 8 years. Finally moved to Pike County, Ohio, Newton Township, near Jasper. Buried Yankee Hill Cemetery in unmarked grave near that of wife Lucy (who has a marker). Veteran of War of 1812, and was given land in Illinois as payment. Will written on May 9, 1873, filed in Pike County (Ohio) Probate Court 9-30-1874. Justice of Peace, Pike Co., 1847-49. Methodist. Will of John Dean, Probated in Pike County, Ohio, September 30, 1874: I, John Dean, of the County of Pike and State of Ohio being in my right mind do make and publish this my last will: I give devise and bequath my estate and property real and personal as follows: To my two sons William Dean and Ellis Dean in consideration of the love and respect care and maintenance exercised towards me in these my last days I bestow all the right title and interest of which I may die possessed in a certain tract or parcel of land located in the State of Illinois arising or growing out of a land warrant issued to me by the U.S. Government for services rendered by me during the War of 1812 with Great Britain which has been entered but have not yet received the Patent for the same but which is now in process of completion.....” Amazingly, we have an interview with John Dean conducted by a local newspaper in Pike County, Ohio in 1872, as local interest in the area’s oldest resident. Here’s John Dean’s life in his own words: “I was born in Loudoun County, Virginia, on the waters of Goose Creek. My father’s name was Samuel. He was born in Virginia. His father’s name was Samuel also. My grandfather was born in Ireland and was of English descent. My grandmother was Sarah Dunkin. She was born in Virginia. My mother’s name was Sarah Russell. She was born in Virginia. Her father, Stephen Russell was born in England. My grandfather, father and myself were brought up to the business of farming. Grandfather raised a large family of children. My father’s family consisted of thirteen children, three boys and ten girls. I am the oldest of my father’s family, and was born May 17, 1779. Consequently, am now nearly 93 years of age. My life has been one of evenness, comparatively speaking. I have never lived an excited life, but like the generality of Americans who were born, bred, and all their lives farmers. All my father’s children were afforded a moderate education, and I have always been able to read and write, and to do business requiring those accomplishments. On the 19th of July, 1802, I married Lucy Mays in Amherst County, VA, to which county I had previously removed. She was only about 17 years old. We had born to us there three of four children, when we removed to Rockbridge County, VA where we resided several years, and then removed to Greenbriar County, thence to Fayette County on the Kanawha River. In 1837, we left Virginia and came to Ohio. And farmed on Alexander Rinnick’s farm near Chillicothe, where we abode for 8 years. On account of continued ill health in my family I was induced to seek a settlement on an elevated position away from the Scioto Bottoms, and came into Pike County. I settled on the farm now owned by Daniel Chestnut, in Newton Township, near Jasper, and from thence to the farm owned by the late Thomas McLellan where he died. When we removed on to that farm it was owned by Alexander, my youngest son, who lately deceased, and with whom I continued to live till he died. I am now living with my son William on an elevated and healthy location in Newton Township. My wife and I raised 11 children, and one died in infancy. Their names were Samuel, Joshua, Rachel, who died in infancy, John, Jordon, Permilia Parks, Elizabeth, James, Sarah, Ellis, William and Alexander. Permilia married Richard Starforth in Virginia and moved subsequently to Highland County, Ohio, where he now resides. Permilia died seven or eight years ago, leaving a large family. Elizabeth married Peter Boyer in Virginia. They remained there. She died, leaving a large family of children. Sarah married Daniel Chestnut, aforesaid, and died some 11 or 12 years ago, leaving 8 children. All my sons married, and have raised, or are raising, families. Samuel resides in Virginia (actually, by then, West Virginia), Joshua in Illinois; John in Pee Pee township, Pike County, Ohio, Jordon died in Marion County, Ohio 4 or 5 years ago, James died in Newton Township in 1863, where Alexander deceased the other day. Ellis resides in Newton Township, ans so does William with whom I now make my home, having buried Alexander on the 29th of December 1871. Lucy, my wife, died in 1852, aged about 65 years. We lived together about 48 years. I was called out to rendezvous three different times during the War of 1812, between the United States and Great Britain, but was not required to enter active service. I was elected Justice of the Peace by the voters of Newton Township, and served in that capacity in 1847, 1848 and 1849. I have never bee called upon by my fellow citizens to fill any other office, civil or military. I believe I am the oldest person living in Pike County at the present time. I belong to the Methodist Church, to which three of my sons in Newton Township connected themselves. Having closed my career as a laborer during the forepart of the late war between the United States and the late Confederacy, I am laid up in ordinary, as they say of a ship no longer seaworthy, and am calmly and patiently biding that period of time hen I shall be called to go “over the river” to the shores of the eternal world.” SAMUEL LAWRENCE DEAN, b. c. 1804, m. JANE DAVIS in Greenbrier Co., WV on 3-27-1827. Moved to Fayette Co. DTR: NANCY ELIZABETH DEAN. There were a number of Davis families in the Greenbrier area, but I have not been able to ascertain the lineage of this Jane Davis. She was b. c. 1810. Likely candidates include Pleasant Davis who m. Sarah Horton 9-7-1806, and Peter Davis who m. Susannah Meadows, 1-7-1799 in Greenbrier Co., but these families have been researched and none of them list Jane as a daughter. Other possibilities include Walter Davis, m. Elinor Harbert, 3-19-1782, or Zachariah Davis m. Margaret Sellars, 2-6-1794. Or, it’s possible Jane wasn’t from a family whose parents married in Greenbrier County at all, as there was considerable migration into the county around that time. Samuel and Jane are found in Fayette Co. In the 1850 cencus, but in the Putnam census in 1870, Hutton District. Besides Nancy Elizabeth, their other children include John (m. Cynthia Simmons), Martha, Rebecca, Sarah, Mary, Lucy, William, Francis, Samuel, and Josiah. NANCY ELIZABETH DEAN, b. c. 1834, m. LEWIS LEVI KINCAID, son of “Mountain Tom” Kincaid. Son: Levi Edmund (Ed) Kincaid, who m. Angeline T. Jones JONES (Welsh) ANGELINE (ANGELINA) TOMSIE JONES, b. c. 1870 (celebrated birthday January 19?), m. 1890 in Fayette Co. WV to LEVI EDMUND (Ed) KINCAID, d. 3-27-1941, Minden, Fayette Co., WV, of pneumonia. The death record gives her age as 69. Buried Catholic cemetery, Scarbro, WV, no marker. Children: MARGARET ELIZABETH (m. Ulysses “Jack” Kuhn), William Cecil, Lolla, Lovey. This individual has been the most difficult to trace. She was from Alleghany County, Virginia, the Boiling Springs-Snake Run area. She first surfaces in the 1880 census as an 11-year-old girls listed as a “servant” in the household of James (age 70) and Mary (age 60) Fitzgerald, both born in Ireland. The only other resident is John Moiraty, 24, listed as son of James and Mary Fitzgerald. One house away is a family consisting of Judy B. Jones, age 57, her daughter America C., age 12, and son Cicero B., age 16. The previous census, 1870, lists this family as follows: John A. Jones, ( b. c. 1821, d. between 1875 and 1880) age 49, Judy (Juda) Jones, age 45, Children: Mary, age 16, Susan, age 14, Martha, age 12, Cesaro B., age 7, and America C., age 1, along with William Ryley, age 6 and in-laws Thomas Carter, age 84, and Catherine Carter, age 80. Also in 1870 is Aswine Jones, 17, living with William Carson. Aswine was supposedly a brother to Angelina, and later became a minister in Monroe County, WV. America C. later m. Edwin Carter and lived in Alleghany County. John A. Jones and Juda B. Carter were m. 11-17-1852 in Alleghany Co. by H. J. Blarrick. They apparently had a son, William Henry Jones, b. 4-30-1859, who died young, as he is not in the census. There is a will in Alleghany Co. of Charles A. Jones listing children, including Kate, Eliza, Amanda, Susan and John, dated 8-25-1882, but our John Jones was dead by then, since Juda’s a widow in the 1880 census. In 1875, John deeded some property to his daughter Mary C. Jones, and notes he is “moving.” John, age 29, is found in the home of Joseph Wickline, in the 1850 Alleghany census. 1840 census lists Jonses: Josiah, John, Charles, Oliver. 1830 lists Isaiah and Valentine. Thomas Carter was b. in NC and m. Catherine McClannahan there. (Thomas Carter was possibly born 12-17-1785 in Halifax, NC, the son of Phillip Carter and Sarah____. Phillip Carter b. c. 1763, Halifax NC, d. 8-16-1835, m. 6-12-1783, Halifax NC. He was the son of Robert Carter, b. c. 1730, Halifax NC, d. c. 1797, m. Sarah ___?), In 1870, there are several other Carter families living near the Jonses, probably other children of Thomas and Catherine. All in all, I suspect Angelina was the illegitimate daughter of either Mary C. (b. 1854) or Susan (b. 1856), most probably Mary C., as she would have been 16 when Angelina was born, but Susan only 14. As the family had lost its breadwinner, the baby was given to the wealthy, elderly family nearby to raise. Note that this family also had a son who was a teenager when Angelina was born, so, who knows? Angelina supposedly made reference to not being treated well as a servant, saying once she was told after complaining of being tired “Servants don’t get tired.” Since Mary C. was still unmarried at age 21 when John gave her property, perhaps the stigma of an illegitimate child was still an issue in her life. In any event, the probability that Angelina was a descendant of John A. and Judy Jones is, I think, almost a surety. As the family she lived with was Irish and old enough to have migrated during the Potato Famine of 1846-48, they were probably also Catholic, and Angelina was Catholic. She supposedly wanted Edmund Kincaid to re-marry her in the Catholic Church in later years, but he refused, and they lived apart after that. Or, Angelina may not be from the John and Judy Jones family at all, and it may be a coincidence she is living two houses away as a servant. There are other possibilities with Angelina (in later documents, “Angeline”). The oldest members of our family believe she was the dtr. of John (or George, or perhaps William!) Jones and Elizabeth Nancy Hubbard, dtr. of the Hubbard found in Mercer County. I have no idea whatsoever on what this is based, and the records in Mercer do not show an Angelina as part of that family. She had a brother Riley who came to Fayette County to work in the coal mines, and that’s how she got there. Riley was married 4 times, the second to a Minnie Reece (divorced), third to ? And finally to Edna ? She also had a sister Molly (m. a Spencer, had a son Simpson Edward Spencer, and ended up in East Northfield, MA, son in Cincinnati, OH. Molly’s husband was a Methodist minister)) and Fannie (m. 1st a Kelly, and a Surber). She also had a brother Byus (Bias?) and there is definitely a Cicero (Cezaro..perhaps Cicero Byus, the same person as found during the same timeframe next door in Monroe Co.) in the family, as well as the brother Azarine (with variable spellings, such as Aswine). This has been the most difficult family to figure in all my research. MAYS (Scottish) JOHN MAYS SR., Scotland. The Mays family is common in Fife, Scotland, and there were several John Mays’s in the area at the same time, making further tracing of this individual difficult.
